History in a Glass: A Cocktail Tutorial that Serves Up the Perfect Mix of Culture and Good Taste

Friday, Nov. 6th: 7 pm EST Virtual Event

A cocktail hour and mixology lesson you won’t want to miss, taught by the authors of the award-winning: “Spirits Sugar Water Bitters: How the Cocktail Conquered the World”.

With its deceptively simple ingredients, the cocktail is an experiment in drinking that’s as old as the American experiment itself.

Join us for a spirited look at the story of the American cocktail – a libation innovation that made its first appearance in the historic record during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency. In this virtual, hands-on class, participants will try their skills at creating both traditional and lesser-known cocktails – including low-proof and no-proof variations that can be enjoyed any time of day.

Raise a glass to a lively class guaranteed to change the way you think about what we drink!

Meet your professors:

Derek Brown is the founder of Washington, D.C.’s Columbia Room – an acclaimed bar serving the capital’s most innovative cocktails that was awarded “Best Bar in America” by Tales of the Cocktail in 2017. Brown’s work has earned numerous accolades and recognitions, including several James Beard Award nominations and 2015  “Bartender of the Year” by Imbibe Magazine. Renowned restaurant critic Tom Sietsema named Brown “one of the fifteen trailblazers since 2000 that have made Washington, D.C. a better place to eat (and drink).”

Spirits Sugars Water Bitters co-author Robert Yule is a former journalist, writer and historian who has traveled the world and calls D.C. and Charlottesville, Virginia home. His career has taken him from reporting on American politics for the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun to writing about global health in sub-Saharan Africa for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. While continuing to tell stories that matter as Executive Vice President of Long Story Short Media, Yule still counts being a tour guide at Monticello as one of the best jobs he’s ever had.
